Protecting
the Family Jewels
Virtually everyone has a few special valuables
around their home. For some it may be a coin or
stamp collection, for others it may be jewelry or
camera equipment. To a burglar,
These are all special targets because they are easy
to carry, easy to fence and easy to find- so don’t
assume that hiding them in a dresser drawer or under
the mattress will keep them safe. For that, you
might want to consider investing in a home sage or
money chest.
Fire-resistant Safes – UL/CSA approved Class C-rated
safes will protect paper documents for up to an hour
at 1700 degrees F; Class B-rated safes for up to two
hours at 1088 degrees F; and class A-rated safes for
up to 4 hours at 2000 degrees F. Special safes are
also available to protect computer tapes and discs
from data loss.
Money Chests – Also UL/CSA-approved, these are
generally smaller than safes. They are permanently
installed, typically in a masonry wall or floor, or
they can be bolted to framing. They are rated on
their ability to withstand attacks with tools (TL),
torches (TR), and explosives (TX). Ratings may also
include an indicator of how long they can withstand
and attack. For example, a TL-30 safe can withstand
30 minutes of continuous drilling.
We’d be happy to review your options and also
suggest ways you can protect highly visible
valuables with your existing security system’s
capabilities.
